Surface reconstruction is essential in handling alterations, the restoration or duplication of molds, but not only. Reverse engineering is often the basis of product design, where, as a starting point, one has a physical prototype built in a model shop or an existing object to be scanned, reconstructed with surfaces and subsequently modified or refined in CAD.

The whole process is managed within our company, from scanning to building surfaces with scanning tools and ground breaking CAD.

Numerous CAD only allow the import of polygonal models generated by the scanner. The step that makes the data available in these systems too, is reverse engineering, that is the reconstruction of the polygonal model with mathematical surfaces.

This approach is the way forward in the case in which the development of a product starts from a prototype sample, or in the case where it is necessary to modify details where the mathematical model is not available.

Reverse engineering is used a lot in the mold sector both for the injection of plastics and for the foundry. Surface reconstruction is precious, in fact, for managing changes, restoring or duplicating molds. Yet again reverse engineering is used in the design stage of the product where sometimes the starting point is in a physical prototype that needs scanning, surface reconstructing and refining through CAD.
